BHP’s Rob Housman spoke at speak at a Congressional Black Caucus Braintrust on youth steroid prevention at the invitation of Congressmen Edolphus Towns and Bobby Rush. Housman was invited to speak on behalf of the Taylor Hooton Foundation in his position as a member of the THF Board of Directors. Housman’s remarks stressed the challenge of attacking steroid use: “Most of our anti-drug messages focus on making kids aware of the downward spiral drugs like can cause—making you to fail in school, lose in sports, alienate your friends and family, lose a job, and destroy your future. In contrast steroids often put our best, over-achieving, hyper competitive kids at risk. These kids aren’t afraid of losing, they are striving to win-and they get all sorts of positive feedback. We have to focus on steroids with steroid specific anti-drug messages and education and outreach programs, like those of the Hooton Foundation. And, we need the help of parents, coaches, trainers, community leaders and other adult influencers.

Book Hill Partners and our media partner, the Homeland Defense Journal, released a groundbreaking survey of 122 experts focused on homeland security issues for the upcoming transition to a new administration.

Key findings of the survey include:

Over 83 percent of experts surveyed expected a major disaster of some kind in the United States within the next four years, within the term of the next president.

Roughly 58 percent of respondents said that the most probable scenario for a major disaster was a natural disaster. More surprisingly almost 22 percent of experts said that the most probable scenario for a major disaster was a terrorist attack with a weapon of mass destruction (chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear specifically).

Almost 72 percent of respondents expect major changes if Sen. Obama is the next president. In contrast, over 80 percent of respondents believed that homeland security policies under a McCain administration would be largely unchanged from those under the Bush administration.

More than half of respondents (54 percent) said DHS should be maintained but reorganized; roughly 30 percent said the agency should be unchanged; and almost 15 percent said the agency should be split up.

The next administration's top four homeland security priorities should be border security, emergency response, development of medical counter-measures to weapons of mass destruction, and port security.

Respondents said the most important expertise and experience for the next secretary of DHS are: managerial experience; military experience; and critical infrastructure experience. Respondents also placed a priority on intelligence and state-level homeland security experience.

The survey results were widely reported including by MarketWatch, Reuters and Fox News.

Book Hill Partner featured in Washington Lawyer magazine cover story on sports steroids scandals, Congress and the law

BHP’s Washington Partner Rob Housman is featured in the cover story of the May edition of the Washington Lawyer discussing the sports steroid scandals and the role of Congress in addressing the problem. Housman led the Clinton White House’s efforts on sports doping reform and Olympic governance reform for then-White House Drug Czar Gen. Barry McCaffrey. Housman now serves as a board member of the Taylor Hooton Foundation, which is focused on youth anti-sports drug education. In the article Housman underscores the impact of the professional scandals on our children: “Kids aren’t stupid . . . How many kids wear jerseys? They know who and what they’re cheering for. They know what it takes to make it to the big leagues. If that bar is artificially set because some percentage of athletes are inflating it then they’ll figure out a way to get there.” In the article’s last words he also stressed that, “The problem is the lowest common denominator factor, and we see it so often in the law . . . . In every single sport, the majority if not the vast majority of athletes are clean or want to be clean. But there will always be people who will want to race to the bottom. We just shouldn’t follow them there.”

Book Hill analysis of market-based measures for homeland security featured in CQ Homeland Security report

On the night of Nov. 9, 2005, a man identified as 23-year-old Iraqi Rawad Jassem Mohammed Abed walked into the Grand Hyatt in Amman, Jordan, ordered a glass of orsange juice, and blew himself up. Twenty-one people were killed, including Syrian-American Moustapha Akkad, a movie producer best known for the “Halloween” horror films, and his 34-year-old American daughter.

It was the first of three simultaneous al Qaeda bombings against Western hotels in Amman that night, which has become known as “Jordan’s 9/11.” In all, nearly 60 people died and 100 were injured in the attacks.

Speaking at a counterterrorism conference in Washington nearly two years later, Thomas Pritzker, chief executive officer of Global Hyatt Corp., said he made it a point to reopen as quickly as possible after the attacks, not for commercial reasons — only a few guests stayed at the hotel in that first week after the incident — but because Hyatt wanted to make a statement to the world that it would not be cowed by terrorism.

“Beyond building approaches to prevention,” Pritzker said, “to me, it’s critical that we build resilience into our own psychology. That is, we’re going to have these events. How quickly are we able to get back up, get back out of the house, get back to work, and do the things that we ought to be doing every day?”
